• Almost everyone has their favorite thinkers or idols. They can be great heroes or saints. In the homes of many Poles, I saw a portrait of Pope John Paul II. I remember the elementary school that I attended during communism. In our classrooms, on the front wall, there were portraits of Gomułka, Cyrankiewicz and Spychalski. Of course, none of us regarded these people as great.
• Recently, in the TV game “Millionaires”, the question was asked for half a million zlotys: “If anyone does not hate his father, mother, wife, children, brothers and sisters, and even himself, he cannot be my desciple”. Who said that? – Jesus Christ, Allah, Moses, or Buddha?” Of course, the correct answer is “Jesus Christ.” But the guy did not know this and resigned at this stage from the further play. Before he had done so, he used the last two “life wheels” – a question to the audience and a phone call to a friend. The audience’s indication of the “Jesus option” was only 40 percent, and the phone call to a friend, who happened to be his father, did not help. His father did not know the answer, either. It only shows how poorly Poles know the Bible, even the gospels considered to be the basic part of it. And such a nation made Jesus its king, the king of their country two years ago. As for me, I think that it was wrong to glorify like that someone who preached such things.
It is worth adding that the highest, the largest statue of Christ in the world is in Polish town Świebodzin. Its height is 36m plus pedestal 16.5 m – total 52.5 m. In Rio de Jeneiro stands the second largest statue of Christ – its height is 30m, pedestal 8 m – total 38 m.
